At first, a number of affective variables play a facilitative role in second language acquisition. These variables include: motivation, self-esteem, self-confidence, anxiety and stress. Stephen Krashen claims that learners with high motivation, self-confidence, a good self-image, and a low level of anxiety are better equipped for success in second language acquisition. Low motivation, low self-esteem, and debilitating anxiety can combine to ‘raise’ the affective filter and form a ‘mental block’ that prevents comprehensible input from being used for acquisition. In other words, when the filter is ‘up’ it impedes language acquisition.

Language acquirers are not usually aware of the fact that they are acquiring language, but are only aware of the fact that they are using the language for communication. What you consciously learn through traditional formal instruction does not necessarily become subconsciously acquired. The result of language acquisition, acquired competence, is also subconscious.
We are generally not consciously aware of the rules of the languages we have acquired. Instead, we have a “feel” for correctness. Grammatical sentences “sound” right, or “feel” right, and errors feel wrong, even if we do not consciously know what rule was violated. Other ways of describing acquisition include implicit subconscious learning, informal learning, and natural learning. In non-technical language, acquisition is “picking-up” a language.
